Chawayantire, Pisac
Today we went to a beautiful village very high up in the
mountains of the Pisac district. The views on the 90 minute ride up were
spectacular but everyone’s hearts were racing at each curve looking over the
side of the mountain. When we arrived, the entire village had gathered in traditional dress, to greet us with music, the national anthem, and
different dances by each school grade.
In a very short time from about 12 to 4, we saw 137
patients. This was an amazing volume considering most of the adults and many of
the children spoke Quechua and required 3 way translation from Quechua to
Spanish to English and back. Thankfully we had Dr. Morales and his crew of able
translators. The children were delighted with what we brought and gave them.
At the end of the day, the mamacitas of the village prepared
us a delicious (delicioso in Spanish or sumec in Quechua) sopa de lisas (a
vegetarian soup with potato, yucca, and other vegetables).

I look forward to reading about your experiences and thoughts about them - the pictures are fantastic - you're artists as well as care givers. I'm going to have to think twice about feeling overwhelmed with 13 patients in an afternoon - what an impact you are having on the area seeing 200 to 300 patients a day. Thanks for sharing!
